A Brief History

Southwell was developed in the mid 1970’s by the (then) State Housing Commission. Prior to that the area was predominantly undeveloped. Unlike surrounding areas, most ofSouthwell was not previously used for market gardening. Aerial photography from its pre-development period indicates thatSouthwell was bushland, of which some remnants, albeit in a degraded state are still evident in many of the areas local parks.

The then State Housing Commission was involved in many projects including the swap with the University for the endowment land for land in Murdoch.  The transfer enabled the State Housing Commission to build theSouthwell Estate.

The pattern and layout of development inSouthwell that has occurred was based largely on the design work carried out by Margaret Fielman, a renowned private town planning consultant of her time.  The Radbourne design model was used in developingSouthwell, which was to encourage pedestrian use by orienting dwellings towards lanes rather than facing the street.  Today, this design model has caused some concerns for the safety of pedestrians and properties adjoining the laneways inSouthwell.
